Access drives a lot of this. A chimney above a steep roof costs more to point than a ground-floor wall of the same size, because half the job is getting there safely.
Can repointing be done in winter?
Mortar needs to stay above freezing while it cures, so we hold off on exterior pointing once overnight temperatures drop consistently below 40 degrees, usually December through February on Staten Island. Interior chimney work can often still happen.
How long does repointed mortar take to cure?
It is workable within a day but takes about a month to reach full strength. Keep sprinklers and pressure washers off freshly pointed brick for at least a week.
Will repointing change the color of my brick?
No, we are only replacing the mortar in the joints, not touching the brick face. We match the new mortar color to what is already there so the repair does not stand out.
